Haskell morrison funeral home12/16/2023 An avid skier, Don was a founder of the Alpine Ski Club and led its members on trips throughout the United States and EuropeĪfter retiring, Don fulfilled his life’s dream of sailing his Catalina 30, from Mobile, Alabama, along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts to Chesapeake Bay, northward past the Statue of Liberty, and up the Hudson River in New York. He was bold and adventurous, embracing the challenges of so many different pursuits, from competing in the Little 500 for Willkie Men’s Co-op, to hiking the Grand Canyon and Half Dome, to dancing the intricate steps of Argentine tango. But life is a school in itself, and Don enjoyed life to its fullest measure. His passion for science inspired many of his students, including his son Dwayne, to pursue careers in science and engineering.ĭon was endlessly curious and inquisitive, a lifelong learner who began as a student and athlete in Rising Sun and Patriot and later earned a master’s degree in education from Indiana University, Bloomington. He was known and is remembered for his love of the subject, his talent for explaining complex ideas, and for his playful approach to teaching.īeyond the classroom, he coached basketball and founded the Rocket Club, where he shared with students the wonders of our world, from the cave systems of the Midwest to the planets and stars of our solar system. He was a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher who reached thousands of students in the 30 years he taught science at University and Tri-North Middle Schools, both in Bloomington. He was the son of Irvin Wesley Bevis and Ethel Mae (Lester) Bevis.ĭon touched the lives of many different people in many ways. He was born on February 1st, 1946, in Vevay.
